Former Russian national team player Alexander Mostovoy moved to pursue a career as a professional coach, reflecting on his path in an interview with Soviet Sport. He stated that he does not feel bound by early ambitions, and that even at the age of forty he might still be without a clear plan. He emphasized that the future is uncertain, noting that anything can change in a week, a month, or a year. He added that he has no definite goal of becoming a coach and that it may never happen.
In early June, the Russian Football Union announced that Mostovoy had applied for a UEFA coaching license through the RFU academy. Reports indicated that he initially missed the deadline for the required training form, but the academy decided to include him on the list of candidates.
Mostovoy spent a large portion of his playing career abroad. He wore the colors of Benfica in Portugal, Strasbourg in France, and Celta in Spain. In the Soviet league, he played for Spartak Moscow. Earlier, Roman Shirokov, who served as head coach and general director of the Ramenskoye football club Leon-Saturn, revealed that Mostovoy turned down an assistant role with Oleg Kononov, who was leading the Moscow regional team at the time.
