The domain. Rross celebrates 15 years – and beats all records between the Cyrillic zones

15 years ago, on May 12, 2010, Russia received its own Cyrillic domain. Rf. This event became historic: For the first time in the world, the national domain of the higher level used the symbols not of Latin, but the Cyrillic alphabet. Today, more than 760 thousand names have been registered in the RRF zone, making it an absolute leader under IDN. For comparison: the Chinese national zone that takes second place has around 167 thousand domains. At the same time, 95% of Russian Cyrillic addresses are actively used: 42% of them lead to full sites, 29% to countries or applications, and 14% are involved for postal services. The rest is either diverted to other domains (15%) or temporarily “parked” (24%).

The geography of registration reflects the digital activity of the regions. Almost a third of all names are assigned to Moscow and the Moscow region, 7%after St. Petersburg. The most active domains. RF is used for their intended goal in Yakutia (36%of the names), the OMK region (34%) and Sevastopol (33%). The domain infrastructure comprises 136 registrars and more than 328 thousand managers, of which 92% are Russian citizens or companies. About 550 new addresses appear in the zone every day. Interest in Cyrillic names is also supported by the secondary market: individual domains are estimated at 4.5 million rubles.

Nowadays there are 17 Cyrillic domains in the world, including the zones of Wit -Russia, Serbia and Kazakhstan. However, the RF remains the most massive, according to experts, the appearance has not only simplified the internet for millions of users, but also became a step in the direction of digital independence, so that you can create an online space in its native language without referring to Latin. So in one and a half decade. RF changed an experiment to an integral part of the runet, which shows that Cyrillic cannot be less demand in the digital age.
