Intel is planning the next change of socket for its processors through a generation. After a recent transition to the LGA-1851 with the release of Core Ultra 200 (Arrow Lake-S), the next Platform Update-Nova Lake-S (Core Ultra 400)-will require the transition to the LGA-19954. This means that the current motherboard with LGA-1851, including the expected update of Arrow Lake Refresh, will remain without the support of new chips in 2026.
According to the documents, the test samples of Nova Lake-S and components for the LGA-1954 are already delivered to partners. The main reason for the change in the socket is a radical increase in the number of cores: up to 16 productive (P-Yara Panter Cove) and 32 energy-efficient (e-Yadra Wolf), as well as 4 LPE cores for background tasks, is expected in top models. Such a configuration requires changes to the design of the platforms, including power and heat settlement.

This step continues the tendency of Intel to separate architectures for different segments. Panther Lake (Core Ultra 300), for example, remains only a mobile solution and Nova Lake-S will debut in Desktopes. At the same time, the current generation of Arrow-S received, despite the improved multi-plate, mixed assessments due to modest growth in games, which improves the criticism of frequent platform change.
The transition to the LGA-1954 can cause disappointment with users who have recently invested in the LGA-1851. For Intel, however, this is a way to stimulate the update of the iron, especially against the background of the growth of the requirements for AI-Calculations-the updated NPU in Arrow Lake Refresh and Nova Lake becomes an important argument. It is expected that Nova Lake-S will be released in the second half of 2026, together with 900 series chipsets. Until now, the company does not comment on plans, but if the trend is stored, the next Razer Lake will probably also require a new socket, which will continue the cycle of frequent platform -ups.
