Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White refused to name the promotion’s lightweight champion, Russia’s Islam Makhachev, as the best fighter. His words were quoted by the publication MMA addict.
“Who do you think is the greatest? Islam? A lot of people believe that Islam lost to a guy in a lower weight class. Can this guy be called the best outside of his weight classes? A lot of people believe that, even the journalists in this room,” he said.
On the night of June 2, Makhachev defeated Poirier. The fight ended with the 32-year-old Russian fighter winning early with a TKO in the fifth round after a guillotine technique, forcing Poirier to submit. As a result of the fight, Makhachev defended his UFC lightweight title.
For Makhachev, who is ranked first among all fighters, this victory was his 26th in 27 fights in his professional career. Poirier lost his ninth of 40 fights.
Javier Mendez, Makhachev’s coach, summer 2024 statedhe wants to see his ward fight Irishman Conor McGregor.
