Czech tennis player Jiri Legechka supported Russian athlete Daniil Medvedev, who had to withdraw from the quarter-final match of the Masters series tournament held in Madrid. This was reported by “Championship.com”.
“Get well soon Daniil,” Legechka wrote to the television camera.
When the score was 3:2 in the first set, Medvedev called a physiotherapist to the field. Presumably the Russian tennis player was bothered by discomfort in the groin area. After the inspection, Medvedev was taken to a room under the stands, but he soon returned and the game continued. Medvedev completed the first set (4:6) and then decided to end the game.
Legechka accordingly advanced to the semi-finals, where he will play Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
On May 30, in the 1/8 finals of the tournament, Medvedev defeated the representative of Kazakhstan, Alexander Bublik. The match, which lasted 1 hour and 44 minutes, ended in two sets with a score of 7:6 (7:3), 6:4. Medvedev is ranked fourth in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.
On March 6, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that it has decided to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to compete in neutral status at the 2024 Summer Olympics in France. Russians and Belarusians will be able to compete in the 2024 Olympics if they comply with the neutral athlete principles previously formulated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
