Olympic champion in speed skating, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova, commenting on the appeal of the Latvian Seimas to French President Emmanuel Macron with a request to ban Russian athletes from entering the country to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, said that the French leader could actually accept this solution. His words lead the way TASS.
“This cannot be ignored. At the beginning, we said that the athletes could go through all the filters, leave their country, sign some documents, but in the end Macron did not let them in, citing the calls of many countries,” he said.
The Latvian side thinks that the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on December 8 to accept Russian athletes to the Paris Summer Olympic Games is irresponsible and should not be supported. Therefore, Latvia calls on France, which hosts the Olympics, to take appropriate measures to prevent Russian athletes from participating in the event.
It was also noted that many Latvian athletes have already expressed their readiness to refuse to participate in the Olympics if Russian athletes go to Paris.
The IOC had previously announced six quotas for Russians to compete in the Olympic Games. The organization said Russian athletes will be required to sign updated terms of participation, which include a commitment to respect the Olympic Charter, including the “peaceful mission of the Olympic movement”. Russian athletes who rank well in their own disciplines will be allowed to compete.
The Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
