Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, the leader in the world rankings, announced on the Chess platform that he will not participate in the Candidates Tournament.
“Yes, I won’t play in the Candidates Tournament, don’t even worry,” Carlsen said.
The Candidates Tournament will be held in Toronto (Canada) from April 2 to April 25, 2024. Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, Frenchman Alireza Firouzja and others will participate in the competition. Azerbaijani Nijat Abasov will replace Carlsen.
Carlsen also withdrew from the tournament in 2022. Russian Nepomniachtchi became the winner ahead of schedule. Chinese Ding Liren took second place, and Azerbaijani Teymur Radjabov took third place.
Magnus Carlsen held the chess crown from 2013 to 2023. The Norwegian defeated Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in his last world title match ahead of schedule and then announced that he would no longer participate in the title defence. In August 2023, Magnus Carlsen won the World Chess Cup, and in December he became world champion in rapid and blitz.
