Vasily Frolov, the grandson of the famous goalkeeper Lev Yashin, explained why his grandfather should not be compared with CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, recognizing the army captain as a legendary goalkeeper for Russia. His words guide the way “Sports Express”.
“But in my opinion, it is impossible to compare the football of those years with the football of today. Dede is the greatest value for world football among our athletes. This at least proves that he is known all over the world. But if we consider Russian and Soviet football statistics, of course Igor Akinfeev has no equal,” said Frolov.
On 6 December, CSKA Moscow president Leonid Giner said that Akinfeev had surpassed all star goalkeepers, including Lev Yashin and Rinat Dasaev.
Yashin is the only goalkeeper in football history who managed to win the Golden Ball. As part of the USSR national team, Dasaev won a silver medal at the 1988 European Championships, as well as a bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games. He received the “World’s Best Goalkeeper” award in 1988.
With CSKA, Akinfeev became the Russian champion six times, won the national cup seven times and won the UEFA Cup in the 2004/05 season. As a member of the Russian national team, he won a bronze medal at the 2008 European Championships held in Austria and Switzerland. In 2018, Akinfeev reached the 1/4 finals of the world championship on home soil with the Russian national team.
