The opening ceremony of the World Sambo Championship took place in Yerevan, the press service of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) reported.
The 2023 World Championship, whose partners are Rosneft and VTB Bank, will be held in the capital of Armenia between 10-12 November. A total of 21 prize sets will be awarded. In accordance with the decision of the FIAS Executive Committee, athletes from Russia, Belarus, France and refugee teams will compete in neutral status.
On October 12, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) until further notice, following the inclusion of the Olympic Councils of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions in the Russian organization. The IOC also stated that it reserves the right to make a decision at the necessary time on the admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The 2022 World Sambo Championship took place in Bishkek. During the event, the Russian team won the team medal competition.
