Oksana Domnina, wife of 2006 Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov, told NTV that doctors continue to try to save her husband’s left arm from amputation.
According to him, despite the athlete’s discharge from the hospital, doctors continue their work.
“The decision to amputate the right arm was made immediately. Doctors fought and are still fighting for the left arm,” Domnina said.
At the beginning of January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized after New Year’s performances at an open-air show. The condition of the man, who was taken to intensive care due to pneumonia and connected to a respirator, was considered to be extremely serious.
The athlete was then transported to a hospital in Kommunarka, resuscitated and connected to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine. During the treatment, both Kostomarov’s feet and hands were amputated. On July 6, doctors discharged the skater from the hospital.
On August 22, Kostomarov appeared on the ice for the first time after a serious illness. The skater performed at Averbukh’s show “Love Letters” held in Sochi.
