Big spending in Saudi Arabia, Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi effect and Barcelona’s balance sheet! Winners and losers of a historic transfer window

Friday night closed the window, at least in Europe, so who stayed well and who wonders how it turned out so badly?

Well, what a transfer market that was! We have probably never experienced a transfer season like this. We’ve seen record levels of spending over the past year, but this time it wasn’t just Chelsea that embarked on an impressive spending spree; the Saudi Pro League stunned the entire football world with their willingness to pay maximum (petro)dollars for high profile players.

The net result was footballers of vastly contrasting quality switching clubs for staggering sums of money, earning unbelievable salaries in the process. We still don’t know how it will all end, but what is already clear is that the northern hemisphere summer period has been much better for some players and clubs than for others.
