The Athletic: Ovechkin never came close to Crosby’s level of play

Athletic journalist Josh Yohe expressed the view that Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin will not be able to reach the level of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby, even if he breaks legendary Wayne Gretzky’s goal record.

“I think Crosby is in the top five players of all time and Ovechkin is in the top ten. I respect Ovechkin’s incredible talent. He’s a treasure. But he’s never been a better player than Crosby. He didn’t even come close to the level of play that Crosby had, ‘ said Yohe.

In the current NHL playoffs, Ovechkin has six (1+5) effective actions in six games with a -2 utility indicator.

The 36-year-old striker managed to score 50 goals and make 40 assists during the regular season. This allowed him to become the fourth-best goal scorer in the NHL regular season.

He’s also moved up to a clean third place among league’s top scorers this season, beating Jaromir Jagr. Only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky are ahead.

Formerly Alexander Ovechkin said about himself and how Krasnoyarsk Sokol striker Alexander Semin became known in the taiga.
