History of the Club World Cup: when it was played and why it was no longer called Intercontinental

The Club World Cup is a FIFA-organized competition that began play in 2005 after the Intercontinental Cup merged with the FIFA Club World Championship and was replaced by the FIFA Club World Cup, the name by which the tournament is known today.

It is a tournament in which the winning teams of the main international tournaments participate, organized by each of the 6 continental confederations affiliated to FIFA: UEFA, Conmebol, Concacaf, AFC, CAF and OFC and, from the 2007 edition, the winning team of the country hosting the competition.
