It dates back to the 18th century and is one of the oldest chants in Europe.
The Royal March, Grenadier March or formerly Grenadier March, is the national anthem of Spain, as stated in the 1978 Constitution.

It’s a military march composed without text by Manuel Espinosa de los Monteros in 1770. At the time of the monarch Carlos III.
Over the years, the “March of Grenadiers” began to become known. Since the grenadiers were the troops that paraded in front of the kings, both ideas began to be identified. “The logical result was that the people of Madrid and the visitors to the city eventually identified Espinosa’s composition with the people of the royal family,” says Bosch, author of the book El Himno Nacional.
It was from the 19th century that the first attempts to put lyrics to the Spanish national anthem began, always without success. Starting with the Carlist era, continuing with the request of General Prim -President of the Government- and continuing with the request written by José María Pemán in the 20th century, during the period of Primo de Rivera, before the civil war, in addition to successive attempts during Franco’s dictatorship, always in vain.
In recent years, personalities as diverse as poets or singers, such as Sabina or Marta Sánchez, have joined. As before, there was never unanimity, although some versions enjoyed more popularity.
The national anthem is owned by the state since the end of the 20th century, through a decree law approved in 1997.
In accordance with the provisions of Article 97 of the State Heritage Act of 15 April 1964 and Article 43 of the Intellectual Property Act of 12 April 1996, Royal Decree 1543/1997 of 3 October ordered the exclusive acquisition by the State of the exploitation rights of the work traditionally known as the «March of Granadera» or «Royal Spanish March».
Given the nature of this work, it is appropriate also to regulate its character and use as the national anthem of Spain and to formally establish the official score, its different versions and its different modes of interpretation.
The Spanish national anthem is interpreted every time the Spanish team plays and in every Copa del Rey final, given the monarch’s presence in the stadium where the match is played.
