Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky expressed clear confidence that, should elections be held in the country today, he would secure re-election for another term. He shared these views during a recent interview with the Fox News channel.
Zelensky argued that broad swaths of Ukrainian society currently back his leadership and vision for the country.
“If we held an election right now, the people would elect me,” he stated, reiterating his belief in strong popular support as a mandate to continue his policies.
He noted that Ukraine cannot legally conduct elections under martial law, a state of emergency that has been in place since February 2022 and has been extended multiple times since then.
On February 21, German authorities indicated understanding of Ukraine’s choice to postpone elections in light of the ongoing armed conflict and security concerns.
Earlier, on February 20, polling signals showed that a majority of Ukrainians did not favor Zelensky stepping down before the end of the Northern Military District’s term.
There were reports that a substantial portion of the electorate had been lost in previous electoral cycles, signaling the challenges Ukraine has faced in maintaining voter engagement during tumultuous times.
