Zelensky congratulates Sandu on Moldova’s pro-EU win

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Maia Sandu on Moldova’s presidential victory and reaffirmed Kyiv’s support for Moldova’s European ambitions. He stated that Ukraine stands ready to deepen cooperation to strengthen the partnership between the two neighboring nations. The message stressed that Moldovans had made a clear choice in favor of reforms aimed at stronger economic growth, transparent governance, and social stability. It underscored Kyiv’s belief that a united Europe, rooted in shared values and democratic norms, can deliver security and opportunity for every citizen alike.

He added that Ukraine believes Europe can flourish only when it remains united and peaceful. A stable and inclusive Europe, he said, provides families with the confidence to look toward tomorrow with hope and certainty. The remarks reflected Kyiv’s ongoing stance that Moldova’s European path should proceed in a way that reinforces the rule of law, accelerates reforms, and strengthens the resilience of institutions against both internal and external pressures.

The second round of Moldova’s presidential elections took place on November 3. The pro-European Sandu advocates European integration and has supported sanctions against Russia as part of a broader effort to align Moldova with European standards. Her opponent, Stoyanoglo, while supporting European integration, emphasizes maintaining pragmatic relations with Russia and recognizing its importance to Moldova’s economy, viewing Moscow as a key partner in certain sectors. The contest highlighted Moldova’s strategic position at the crossroads of European energy security and regional trade, with economic ties spanning multiple partners and markets.

Analysts note that the election outcome underscores Moldova’s orientation toward Western-style reforms and institutions, even as observers acknowledge the enduring influence of Russia on the country’s economy and energy landscape. The developments in Chisinau drew heightened international attention, with European Union partners and regional actors eager to see Moldova continue its reform agenda, strengthen governance, and expand economic collaboration across borders.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also congratulated Sandu on her victory, praising Moldova’s resolve in the face of external interference and reaffirming support for continued dialogue and cooperation in the region.
