The figures speak for themselves, and it would be surprising to hear voices defending the share of General Government Budgets allocated to investments. Alicante appears as the worst performing frontier in per capita investment distribution, with national averages showing 85.5 euros per resident while the regional total rises to 283.7 euros. With these numbers, Generalitat leader Ximo Puig joined today’s chorus demanding a correction to the perceived injustice. This data frame underscores a persistent gap in funding for the province.
General Government Budgets are aligned with Community Regulation and are meant to allocate resources by population, yet they appear to overlook the needs of Alicante. The Consell president commented that the accounts are nearly anchored to the historical aim of distributing funds based on population across the Community. He described Alicante’s budget as clearly inadequate and difficult to justify. He asserted that some historic claims linked to the lands of Alicante should be kept alive and that the budget would be revisited with amendments.
Worst budgets in history for Alicante
Puig noted that the Generalitat has set an investment framework that reflects the diverse realities of the Valencia regions. He added that this is why a request should be made to the Spanish Government to follow suit.
After visiting the Mariano Benlliure Museum in Crevillent, the Valencian president emphasized a social orientation in the budgets. The aim is to boost social policies and cushion inflation as much as possible.
Mazón: “Sánchez-Puig duo is deadly for Alicante”
Aitana Mas, second vice president of the Generalitat and Consell spokesperson, voiced disappointment with the budget project that centers on Alicante. Her comments came during the weekly Consell appearance after the plenary session in Alicante, notably in Crevillent. Mas (Compromís) joined civil society from the Generalitat and representatives in Congress and the PGE in describing the plan as a lobby pressuring the government to boost funding.
The Equality Minister criticized not only the small allocation to the province but also the failure to implement the money promised in the PGE. In 2021, only 469 million of the 1,107 million promised for the Community as a whole were executed. She stressed that this shortfall is a source of disappointment for the Consell and for all Valencians.
Ana Barceló on State Budgets: “There is not only resentment, but also a call for correction”
For these reasons, the Botànic government characterized the PGE draft as unacceptable, even though it includes about a 5% increase relative to 2022 funding for the Community as a whole.
