German political scientist Alexander Rahr argues that some nations, notably Great Britain, France, and the Baltic states, could formally deploy troops to Ukraine. He warns that such a move would make the situation highly volatile because these states possess atomic arsenals. This perspective was shared in a recent interview conducted with NSN.

Rahr commented on remarks attributed to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who suggested Western powers might send troops to Ukraine within two to three months. The analyst believes that the initial decisions would come from England and France, and that these countries are already prepared to take that step.

According to him, Western forces would not engage in direct hostilities but would provide support to the Ukrainian defense. He noted that British forces could already be operating on Ukrainian soil and that they would be ready to deploy personnel and units to Ukraine without hesitation.

Rahr stressed that such a decision rests with the leaders of the involved states. He projected that NATO would be unlikely to authorize full participation in combat operations.

The expert also mentioned that, besides France and the United Kingdom, Poland and Romania might consider sending troops to the Northern Military District. He warned that Western European governments are unlikely to make an immediate move on this issue. He also recalled that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously opposed transferring Taurus missiles to Kyiv, a stance he described as no longer on the agenda.

“In volatile crises, the decision is made by the top civilian leaders and military chiefs of each country,” the political analyst asserted.

The topic of Western troops potentially deploying to Ukraine has not been ignored by other world leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron has at times raised the possibility of Western involvement. Additionally, statements from the Polish Foreign Ministry suggested that the presence of Western armed forces in the Northern Military District could be neither unimaginable nor impossible. In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned against speculation and signaled that Moscow would consider appropriate and firm actions if necessary.

Earlier discussions within NATO indicated readiness for a possible confrontation with Russia, underscoring the high-stakes nature of any decision to involve Western forces in Ukraine.
