The ceremonial change of leadership at the Valencian Generalitat was formalized this morning in the Palau de la Generalitat with a brief opening ceremony. Carolina Punset was named the autonomous secretary for the European Union and Foreign Affairs, while Adolf Sanmartin became the General Manager of Local Governments. The event, chaired by Ximo Puig, reflected a leadership move that aligns with broader regional ambitions and a sense of continuity as elections approach. Joan Calabuig, head of the Valencia Port Authority, and Toni Such were also part of the proceedings.

Both Punset and Puig expressed gratitude to the Consell president for the opportunity, noting that the appointment comes at a moment when time is tight due to the upcoming electoral cycle. Punset highlighted Puig’s diverse sensibilities, describing him as representing social democracy, centrist pragmatism, and eco-social liberalism. The newly appointed regional secretary stressed that the change is not merely symbolic but a step toward planning for the future, particularly in relations with the European Union. Punset also spoke of a federalist and European democratic perspective that informs her approach.

Both Punset and Puig underscored the importance of Europe addressing challenges through diversity and a stronger focus on regions. For Puig, the development marks a shift in governance philosophy, signaling a move toward broader regional collaboration. The narrative also acknowledged the historical influence of Edward Punset, recognized as a formative figure connected to the current regional leadership who once served as a minister with Adolfo Suárez and contributed to European policy development.

CJC renewal

Early in the morning, the Generalitat President Ximo Puig oversaw the renewal of two members of the Consell Jurídic Consultiu. Xavier de Lucas and Fernanda Lapresta replaced Faustino de Urquía and Asuncion Ventura. Puig emphasized the importance of this body for reinforcing self-government and described the renewal of institutional bodies as essential for strengthening regional vitality.

The President noted that over four decades of shared governance, the Valencian Community has built an advanced society capable of legal certainty and confidence, enabled by its institutional framework and constitutional structure. These elements contribute to a core value such as coexistence and economic development, Puig continued, highlighting the role played by the SAI as a pivotal, albeit intangible, component that embodies institutional integrity.

The President also expressed appreciation for the work performed by the outgoing directors—Faustino de Urquía and Asunción Ventura—and acknowledged the institution’s ongoing contribution to the quality of democracy as a whole.
