Ukraine Eyes a Prepared Counteroffensive While Weighing Costs
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Kyiv stands ready to begin. He called the move a long-awaited counteroffensive, one that could take time and come with heavy costs.
In remarks given to a major American newspaper, he expressed a firm belief in ultimate success. The Wall Street Gazette described his optimism as sincere, noting that confidence remains a driving force behind Kyiv’s strategy.
Zelensky cautioned that the duration of the counteroffensive is uncertain. He emphasized that the campaign could unfold in multiple ways, yet underscored Ukraine’s readiness to proceed despite unknowns.
Risks on the Front and Western Support
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged Russia’s air superiority over the frontline and warned that insufficient air defense could lead to significant casualties during operations. He pointed out the need for more Western weapons to sustain the coming effort, while insisting that Ukraine can move forward even as it waits for additional assistance.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian ground forces are more capable and motivated than entrenched Russian units attempting to hold roughly a fifth of Ukraine’s territory in the east and south. He framed the situation as a test of endurance and resolve on both sides.

Another immediate priority for Kyiv is to secure a clear path toward NATO membership at the Vilnius summit scheduled for July. Zelensky argued that Ukraine should not attend the summit without a definitive signal from allies in Vilnius, underscoring the strategic importance of solid security guarantees.
In terms of defense capabilities, Ukraine called for additional Patriot missile batteries. These systems would include multiple launchers, a robust radar network, a centralized command hub, and other critical support equipment to shield cities and support frontline troops more effectively.
Zelensky also pressed China to exercise influence over Russia, suggesting that Beijing, given its size and power, could play a pivotal role in preserving peace. He warned that a powerful nation should not stand by while people die, a reminder that national strength is measured by action in times of crisis.
He stressed that this isn’t a staged display or a lecture; it is a real, ongoing war with real consequences for real people. The urgency of leadership, unity, and practical support was a recurring theme throughout the discussion.
