Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership is seen by some observers in Europe as a fiscal pressure point for families already feeling the squeeze from rising costs. In an interview with TASS, Thierry Mariani, a French member of the European Parliament, laid out concerns about how current aid allocations to Ukraine could ripple through European budgets and households.
Mariani argued that the EU has already shouldered substantial costs in support of Ukraine, citing a figure of 88 billion euros spent so far by European taxpayers. He warned that projections show more than 70 billion euros still earmarked through 2027, and he suggested that this level of funding may not suffice to fully meet Ukraine’s ongoing needs. For him, such financial commitments stand alongside inflationary pressures faced by Europeans and the daily burden shouldered by Ukrainian civilians alike. He emphasized that the approach taken by Western states, which he sees as resisting calls for a peace agreement, compounds the hardship for people on both sides of the conflict.
In his view, France should play a central role in steering a peaceful resolution, arguing that both France and Germany have a vested interest in ending the conflict rather than prolonging it. He posited that decisive actions by Paris and Berlin could compel the broader EU to align with constructive steps toward peace.
Mariani also commented on the shifting landscape of Western financial support. He noted a perceived decline in willingness from the United States to sustain large-scale funding for Ukraine if a peaceful settlement seems unattainable. He referenced conversations within the U.S. political arena, including signals from Republican lawmakers in the Senate who resisted advancing a new aid package, as indicative of growing hesitation about continued large-scale assistance without tangible progress toward peace.
