Turkish Foreign Ministry Responds to UN Peacekeeping Actions in Cyprus and Notes Travel Safety for Russian Citizens

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned recent actions by the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus, where Turkish Cypriots are engaged in roadwork within the buffer zone. Reports from TASS have noted the claim. As a guarantor country, Turkey urged the UN peacekeepers to refrain from conduct or rhetoric that could cast doubt on the mission they have maintained in Cyprus for nearly six decades. The ministry called for fair treatment of both communities in the island and emphasized respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

A statement issued by the Turkish side underscored the importance of avoiding measures that might prejudge the situation on the ground and urged equal consideration for all residents in the affected area. The message highlighted a long-standing commitment to the safety and stability of the region, while reaffirming the TRNC’s status in line with applicable international arrangements.

In other regional notes, a prominent Russian travel industry representative commented on travel safety for Russian citizens. The former vice president of a major travel association asserted that Türkiye and Cyprus are among the safest destinations for Russians. He also identified Europe, the Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates as suitable options for travelers seeking secure experiences.

At the same time, the same official advised caution regarding travel to certain destinations, noting that some countries have seen security concerns affecting tourists. The guidance suggested avoiding trips to Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Tunisia was described as presenting partial risk to visitors from India and China due to recent incidents.

Earlier reports indicated shifts in the number of Russian residents who obtained Turkish residence permits during the previous year, reflecting evolving travel and residency patterns in the region.
