In the Republican presidential nomination race, a notable share of voters indicate they would back former President Donald Trump. This finding comes from a major polling effort cited by Reuters and Ipsos, reflecting a snapshot of opinion across the party base.

The study indicates that 49 percent of respondents who identify as Republican supporters prefer Trump. By comparison, Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, attracts 12 percent, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis draws 11 percent support among Republicans.

About 4 percent of those surveyed expressed support for Vivek Ramaswamy, and roughly 18 percent were undecided or said they did not know whom to support.

The online survey gathered responses from 1,941 Americans who lean Republican over a period from January 3 to January 9.

In a separate commentary, Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman, argued that Trump should not participate in the political process and urged that his name be removed from future primary ballots.

Politico has observed that the Republican Party’s willingness to back Trump in the 2024 election, along with a perceived tolerance of the riots at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, may have helped shape the trajectory toward a potential re-election bid for the former president.

There was also a prior legal development noted, with reports that Trump faced a Colorado primary hurdle that was resolved by the U.S. Supreme Court. These events collectively illustrate the evolving dynamics within the party and the ongoing debates over eligibility, allegiance, and the path to the nomination.
