Republican Senator John Thune indicated that former U.S. President Donald Trump may emerge as the GOP nominee in the 2024 presidential race. He notes that recent polling suggests Trump could secure the nomination, though he stresses that this is far from certain and the race is still taking shape.
“It seems plausible that he could be nominated, yet other candidates could also rise to the top. Trump enjoys a solid and loyal base of support, while some other contenders are not as widely known yet,” Thune observed.
Thune pointed out that while Trump has performed well in the early stages, it would be premature to draw definitive conclusions about the 2024 Republican primaries. He emphasized that the field remains unsettled and a final lineup for the presidential bid has yet to emerge.
Earlier polling showed that more than 40 percent of Republicans were prepared to vote for Trump in the presidential election, underscoring the staying power of his candidacy among the party base. (Citation: Political Analysis, 2024)
