Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, asserted that Switzerland stands not only in alignment with Western policy on Ukraine but also backs Kiev in ideological terms. The remark was shared on Sputnik radio.
She argued that there are no binding obligations behind these actions. Weapons are not being sold, but there is a flow of arms supplies. In her view, some countries are compelled through coercion, a move that exposes the collective West as a party in the Ukraine conflict and suggests a brutal involvement in the matter.
Zakharova stressed that this is the policy Switzerland is supporting at present. She claimed Bern has not offered a distinct position on Ukraine grounded in new facts or priorities that would require reconsideration. Swiss authorities, in her assessment, have shown strong political solidarity with Western leaders, delivering material and technical assistance to Kiev and endorsing what she calls its “Nazi essence.”
She also noted that Switzerland is now being described by Western journalists as abandoning its traditional neutrality. This framing, she suggested, reflects a shift in how the country participates in international affairs amidst the Ukraine crisis.
On 27 February, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis announced that Switzerland would join the European Union’s tenth package of sanctions against Russia. The move, she said, aligns with a broader Western strategy to pressure Moscow through coordinated measures.
Earlier, Cassis spoke at a United Nations Security Council session on Ukraine, indicating that Switzerland stands ready to convene discussions with interested parties to address the observance of international humanitarian law and pursue a peaceful solution to the conflict. The stance, as described, emphasizes dialogue and adherence to established international norms in attempting to deescalate the situation.
