Research using artificial intelligence
Criteria for establishing the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Supervisory Agency were approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday. The foundations that will guide the process remain in place, and the session confirmed the path forward. The Spanish Space Agency, as announced late last week by mayor Carlos González, noted that Elche is a target location for the new agency. Following Cabinet approval, the grounding rules and procedures will be published in the Official State Bulletin on Wednesday, making the framework official and accessible to all stakeholders.
From the moment of publication, autonomous communities and other relevant local organizations will have a one-month window to submit their candidacies. Nominations should clearly demonstrate alignment with the agency’s mission and show credible capacity to contribute to Spain’s AI ecosystem. Submissions should include a concise report from the submitting autonomous community illustrating eligibility, capacity, and how the proposal aligns with regional priorities. If multiple offices submit in a single community, the process will require a defined preference order to ensure fair consideration and avoid duplication of efforts.

According to reports from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, the review of applications to host the AI Agency is expected to take about six months. The race will feature strong contenders, with Granada and Santiago de Compostela among the notable rivals. The project’s initial funding is set at five million euros to launch the initiative and establish the initial governance and operational structure. Spain is positioning itself to become the first country within the European Union to host a dedicated AI supervisory authority, signaling a bold step toward centralized oversight of artificial intelligence activities across the nation.
