Saudi Foreign Minister Urges Consistent Humanitarian Standards Amid Gaza Crisis

At a Palestine summit held in Cairo, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud articulated concerns about what he described as double standards among some states when it comes to condemning actions in the Gaza Strip. He stressed that Riyadh does not excuse or overlook violations of international humanitarian law by any party involved in the conflict and affirmed that the kingdom condemns aggression against civilians wherever it occurs. The remarks underscored a call for consistency in international responses and a commitment to upholding humanitarian norms amid the escalating crisis.

According to the foreign policy chief, the international community must take a firm, unified stance to protect human rights and to insist on accountability from all sides. He urged an immediate move away from inconsistent positions that, in his view, undermine efforts to safeguard civilians and to uphold the rule of law in armed conflicts. The minister emphasized that the protection of civilian lives is non-negotiable and should guide any future international action or diplomatic engagement in the region.

In his address, he highlighted the urgency of ending hostilities that have devastated communities in the Gaza Strip. He called on Israeli forces to pause attacks that have resulted in widespread harm and warned that continued bombing could trigger consequences that extend far beyond the immediate area, affecting regional stability and potentially drawing broader international repercussions. The message was clear: restraint and a focus on civilian protection are essential to prevent a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also noted that some members of the international community have hesitated to take a clear, principled position on the Middle East crisis. He described this ambiguity as a source of concern for the Saudi government, arguing that decisive action and principled leadership are required to de-escalate tensions, restore confidence in international norms, and create space for meaningful diplomatic dialogue. The stance reflected a broader appeal for moral clarity and consistent standards in addressing violations and human rights.

In sharing his reflections, the minister referenced the perspective of former British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who commented on the Israeli military’s approach to recent operations. The remarks were presented to illustrate a shared international discourse on restraint and proportionality in military actions, a discourse that the Saudi side encouraged others to join. The overall message reinforced a push for measured, rights-respecting responses that prioritize civilian safety and rigorous adherence to international law amid the ongoing crisis.
