The guests on the program “Salon Journalarski” (TVP Info) discussed the life sentence handed to Stefan Wilmont, the man who killed Gdańsk mayor Paweł Adamowicz.
While the legal reasoning of the judgment was accepted by many, a large portion of the Civic Platform community reacted differently, questioning its broader implications. The court clearly stated that Stefan Wilmont was a demoralized individual. At no point does the ruling point to a political motive.
– said Mark Formuła, editor-in-chief of Gazeta Gdańska.
There is something about the majesty of memory. Adamowicz’s memory deserves space to be honored. As a resident of Gdańsk, I would like to be able to place flowers on his grave every November 1. For President Adamowicz to become part of the shared memory, the opposition cannot be forced to accept two things. First, that honoring him would be tied to a narrative portraying his presidency as flawless, which it was not. Second, that honoring him would be tied to the idea that those involved had blood on their hands, and similar insinuations.
– remarked Peter Semka, journalist for Do Rzeczy.
This verdict is a statement that the political thread was not present. It would require significant malice to claim that the judge represented one side in the political dispute.
– he added.
“It’s time to end it”
Historian Malgorzata Zaryńska highlighted how the opposition’s response to Adamowicz’s tragic death was fueled by deliberate emotion, turning it into a force behind political choices. It’s time to end it.
Historian Piotr Gursztyn noted that many editorials focused on Adamowicz’s legal troubles, a pattern that has been observed across the media landscape. It is well known, though often unspoken, that most outlets across the political spectrum reported on the mayor’s problems. From his perspective, none of the editors crossed the line of reliability.
– she stated.
