Russia maintains a peacekeeping presence in Transnistria, a move described by Vadim Krasnoselsky, the head of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), as a key factor in regional stability. The statement, reported by TASS, emphasizes that Moscow continues to fulfill a peacekeeping role within the territory it controls and influences.

Krasnoselsky emphasized that Russia operates under its own international framework and jurisdiction in this area. He noted that the peacekeeping mechanisms currently in place have been activated and view them as a stabilizing element amid ongoing regional tensions and a shifting geopolitical landscape.

According to the PMR leader, threats have persisted for more than three decades since the creation of Pridnestrovie, and the current geopolitical climate has amplified these risks. He added that the PMR has not taken aggressive action and has focused on actions taken in the name of peace since its founding on September 2, 1990.

In May, Vitaly Ignatiev, the PMR Foreign Minister, stated that the Russian peacekeeping contingent will continue to operate in Transnistria even if Moldova withdraws from the agreement governing the peaceful settlement of the conflict. This stance reflects Moscow’s ongoing involvement and the observers’ interest in the stability of the region.

There has been public commentary from former Moldovan political figures suggesting that a military provocation near the PMR borders was being prepared, highlighting the persistent volatility in the area and the broader concerns about the security environment surrounding Transnistria and its governance structures.
