Russia Raises Concerns Over EU Moves on Ukrainian Grain Amid Regional Rebukes
Kirill Logvinov, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the European Union, warned that Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland resisting the European Commission’s stance on Ukrainian agricultural imports could spark a ripple effect. He suggested that such defiance might encourage other EU members to push back against decisions that do not align with their national interests. Logvinov shared these views in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to Logvinov, the latest friction stems from the EU’s strategy of providing broad support to Kyiv. The issue centers on rising imports of Ukrainian farm products into the EU, a situation he says is particularly acute for Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. He argued that this friction reflects broader tensions between the bloc’s political directives and the economic priorities of individual member states, a tension he believes has grown as sanctions against Russia intensify.
The deputy ambassador highlighted that when a few countries refuse to accept adverse terms, their stance can act as a model for others seeking to resist EU conditions that clash with their domestic interests. Adina Valean, who previously served as European Transport Commissioner, remarked that land exports of Ukrainian grain across the Polish border decreased threefold in the current year compared with 2022.
