Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at the United Nations headquarters, focusing on bilateral trade and broader economic cooperation. The talks were reported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting underscored the value of continuing close cooperation to sustain and expand mutually beneficial ties. Participants reviewed progress on key Russian Turkish energy projects and outlined the schedule for forthcoming bilateral engagements.
Beyond economic issues, the two ministers exchanged views on a wide range of international topics. They reaffirmed the need to coordinate their steps to pursue mutually acceptable solutions to pressing regional challenges, notably the situations in the Gaza Strip, Syria, and the broader Middle East, as well as the Black Sea region. The discussion also highlighted strategic considerations for the Transcaucasus and maritime security in adjacent waters.
Lavrov arrived in New York on January 22 to participate in United Nations Security Council meetings addressing the Middle East and Ukraine, where multiple diplomatic dialogues were being held with a view to stabilizing volatile theaters and advancing regional dialogue, according to the ministry.
During the visit, Lavrov also held a conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, reflecting ongoing regional consultations among key partners and allies in pursuing shared goals. The Russian side emphasized that Western approaches to democracy were not a central theme of these exchanges, focusing instead on concrete regional issues and practical cooperation, as reported by official sources.
