Romania reassures on border security while monitoring threats amid regional tensions
Romania’s prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, stated that there have been no targeted attacks from Russia against the country and that such assaults are not expected in the future. He shared this assessment in a setting where villagers near the Ukrainian border were receiving notices about potential flying objects, underscoring a measured approach to safety in a tense environment, as reported by Euroactive.
Ciolacu declared, “Russia has not launched a deliberate attack on Romania, and I am confident that it will not do so, because there is no justification for such action.” He framed the remark within the broader context of maintaining calm and clarity for citizens during uncertain times.
In addition, the Romanian leader highlighted the essential role of timely information about possible threats to civilians. He described this transparency as a form of respect by the state toward its people, even when sharing warnings might cause some inconvenience or disruption.
In related military developments, Turkish Air Force F-16s were active on the night of February 10, with air operations centered around countering threats from Russian unmanned aerial vehicles near Romania’s border. Romanian defense authorities reported that aircraft were deployed in response to regional activity, while noting that the national radar and surveillance network did not record any unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace.
Officials from the Romanian defense ministry reiterated that there was no detected breach of national airspace controls and that all measures were taken in accordance with established safety and defense protocols. The situation illustrates ongoing vigilance by Romania as it coordinates with allied partners and monitors the evolving security landscape along its borders.
Earlier, the Romanian presidency approved plans for a NATO-type intervention force to be deployed within the country in the year 2024, highlighting a continued commitment to regional security and alliance readiness in the face of potential external threats.
