Early warnings for extreme events, plans against dangerous ozone levels, tackling marine litter, emissions taxes, turning Tabarca into the model sustainable island in the Mediterranean, and even a network of climate shelters for severe weather. Proposals addressing the environmental crisis multiplied during this election cycle. With the exception of far-right voices, all parties discuss energy transition, waste management, fire prevention, and the 2030 Agenda. Four years ago, the emphasis was on linking natural protection with policies to reduce and adapt to global warming.

September 2019 marked a firm environmental commitment from the Generalitat. A forceful push to transform the energy and production model took the stage, backed by laws accelerating sustainable goals. The Climate Change and Ecological Transition Act and the Waste Prevention and Circular Economy Act emerged as major milestones, even as the deployment of renewables continued at a cautious pace. Meanwhile, the Delegate Commission of the Council for Ecological Transition and Environmental Sustainability faced changes as several departments began coordinating more directly to drive climate initiatives. Today, the coalition partners leading the Generalitat advocate advancing measures approved near the end of this legislature into Botànic III in the years ahead. Ideas like reviving abandoned crops or extensive livestock farming as a hedge against megafires sparked by rural migration, and increasing vegetable fuel in mountainous regions, recur across party platforms including PSPV, Compromís, and Unides Podem.

The Socialist Center positions emphasize developing sectoral strategies to adapt activities such as tourism and agriculture to climate change. Compromís pushes forward with a Citizens’ Assembly for Climate, a framework where emergency responses and policy measures are debated and decided. Unides Podem adds the need to redesign urban spaces with sustainable drainage that can better withstand increasingly frequent extreme storms.

with the 2030 Agenda

Even centrists and conservatives are embracing many policies once seen as the province of greens. In line with the European Union’s target to neutralize greenhouse gases, the People’s Party aligns with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. It also stresses opposition to any environmental law from the Spanish Government that could conflict with regional interests.

Both the government and the opposition agree on strengthening water strategies to preserve l’Albufera and to implement comprehensive measures against coastal erosion. While waste management ideas converge, Unides Podem pushes for reforming agreements with Ecoembes and Ecovidrio. On the circular economy, the PP underscores that this is not a passing trend. The message rings through: the transition is here to stay and will help build a better future for communities across the region. Endorsements from everyday supporters and public sentiment alike shape the programs, underscoring a broad commitment to resilience and sustainable growth.
