Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled an upcoming meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, outlining plans to discuss the expansion of humanitarian exchanges alongside broader bilateral cooperation.
“We will host events soon and hold a discussion with the President of China. We will talk about the important topics,” the president stated during an open lesson with Russian schoolchildren, framing the dialogue as a step toward closer ties between the two nations.
Putin added that Xi calls him a friend, and he likewise regards Xi as a friend who has contributed significantly to deepening Russian-Chinese relations across multiple sectors. The President did not specify the exact date of the engagement or the precise nature of the events planned.
Reports in late August from Bloomberg suggested a potential visit by Putin to China in October 2023 to participate in the Belt and Road Forum. Preparations for such a visit were confirmed by both the Federation Council and the Kremlin, though Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov warned that discussions of dates and schedules were premature, noting that a program of mutual visits at high levels was being developed.
If realized, the trip would mark Putin’s first foreign travel since the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant, alleging war crimes related to the forced relocation of residents, including children, from occupied Ukrainian territories to Russia.
Trade with China
During the same remarks, Putin highlighted a notable rise in Russia’s trade with Asian economies in recent years. He reflected on the shifting center of economic and political gravity toward Asia, describing it as an objective, inevitable trend driven by the region’s rapid development.
He also noted the strong interest in studies of eastern languages and the need for skilled professionals to engage with Asian partners. At the same time, he urged not to overlook other regions and areas of collaboration.
leadership traits
In response to a student inquiry about leadership growth, the president offered a candid perspective. He suggested that true leadership emerges from doing what one loves, achieving tangible results, and then setting a positive example for others. According to him, consistent progress gradually cultivates leadership qualities that others will follow. He emphasized that the path to leadership is built through action and ongoing achievement.
main idea
Putin described a deep affection for Russia as the “main idea” guiding the open lecture series focused on important topics. He stated that genuine patriotism should be expressed creatively, whether viewed through history, current challenges, or familial and cultural traditions. The goal, he explained, is to present the topic in varied, engaging ways that capture the imagination of young people.
The President announced the launch of a family competition aimed at strengthening traditional values in Russia, with applications opening on September 4. He expressed hope that this initiative would support the development of core national values that underpin growth, helping young people find their path in life and realize their potential through education and personal effort. He invited participants from different generations to join in this ongoing effort.
“Conversations on Important Issues” is a lecture series addressing key facets of modern life in Russia. Putin also participated in an earlier open lecture in Kaliningrad on the first of September last year, continuing a broader program of public dialogue on vital topics.
