Socialist Ximo Puig, who leads the Generalitat, argues that Madrid’s leader Isabel Díaz Ayuso has rejected the central government’s energy-saving measures in a move that reflects what he views as irresponsible behavior. The Catalan official notes that the present moment, shaped by the Ukraine crisis and a rising urgency to address climate change, demands a coordinated response rather than unilateral actions.

Puig described Ayuso’s stance as irresponsible, a claim he reiterated after being asked to respond to the Madrid president’s controversial remarks. Ayuso had stated that public buildings should not shut down or dim exterior lights. Puig warned that such positions could provoke uncertainty, deter tourism, and harm consumer confidence.

Ayuso opposes Government’s energy saving plan: ‘Madrid is not closing’

During the presentation of the Festival de les Humanitats de Dénia earlier today, Puig stated that the Generalitat has long been advancing its own energy efficiency program. He warned that ignoring the climate emergency and the broader global push toward sustainable energy is a dangerous stance. Puig argued that resisting policy measures aimed at reducing energy waste undermines collective progress and may close off future opportunities.

Puig emphasized that taking action is both ecologically responsible and economically prudent. He urged solidarity with nations most affected by the energy crisis and pointed out that the regional government is navigating a difficult environment, including European and global economic pressures.

In this framework, he underscored a push to expand renewable energy generation and explore alternative solutions, criticizing any approach that ignores scientific advancement as imprudent. He highlighted that leadership should rise above partisan divides when addressing energy efficiency and climate resilience.

When questioned about the symbolic nature of certain gestures, such as whether public officials might remove ties or jackets in formal settings, Puig noted that attire choices are personal and situational rather than essential policy actions. He stressed that the Consell would intensify energy-saving measures across all its departments, ensuring appropriate temperatures and nonessential lighting is minimized. He framed energy conservation as a collective endeavor that also delivers personal savings amid inflation, urging everyone to contribute toward securing energy for the future.
