Alongside Ximo Puig, the secretary-general and deputy chairman of the Generalitat, the PSPV is preparing to coordinate with the provincial PSOE branch in Alicante. As soon as the late-arriving proposals are reviewed, the roadmap presented on Wednesday by Alejandro Soler is being refined according to PSPV sources. When the national executive commission convenes on Thursday afternoon, the Socialist leadership is expected to present a final proposal for the nominations ahead of the general election on July 23.
Provincial PSOE challenges Valencia: Soler tops the list in Congress, Franco in the Senate
As noted, discussions focus on the federal leadership of the PSOE to be approved at the Saturday federal committee meeting, and on what changes might emerge. The lists for Congress and the Senate in Alicante, and likewise in the Valencia province, appear to be developing behind the scenes. The provincial bodies are working through the nominations, aiming to present a united slate while navigating differences among local committees.
In Alicante, there is a clear aim to adjust the Upper House slate by excluding the veteran ex-senator Ángel Franco from the proposal. Franco began to pursue a Senate candidacy in March 2019 but was sidelined when the federal committee shifted course. At that time, José Asensi, a prominent figure associated with the broader bloc, took the lead in the province. The ongoing discussions also consider changes to certain names on the Congressional ticket, and there is even speculation about possible cancellations. It remains to be seen whether Soler will head the list or if another name will be selected.
Ángel Franco threatens to return to the Senate: top of the list of candidates in Alicante parliament
In the Valencia region, the national leadership of the PSPV is expected to set the provincial parliamentary elections along the lines proposed by the mayor of Mislata. Carlos Fernandez Bielsa is considered a candidate for the presidency of the Diputación de Valencia. In Alicante, the provincial assembly has not yet consolidated its lineup, with negotiations ongoing and no formal offer on the table. This atmosphere underscores a broader strategic effort to shape both the Senate and Congress slates in alignment with regional goals while fostering cohesion within the party across provinces.
