Macarena Montesinos, a deputy from Alicante, will take on the role of coordinator for the slate she forms. The People’s Party has organized itself to confront both municipal and regional elections scheduled for the upcoming spring. Montesinos, the Alicante MP in Congress and a close ally of regional president Carlos Mazón in public appearances, will share this new duty with Xavier García Albiol. According to the party’s new spokesperson, Borja Sémper, who has rejoined politics after a three-year pause, the PP campaign will be characterized by candor and practicality, adapting to the nuances of each region and focusing on issues that matter to residents of every community. The pre-campaign kicks off on Saturday with the public presentation of twelve regional candidates in Zaragoza, an event that will also draw leaders from Andalusia, Galicia, and Castilla y León who will only be evaluating matters within their own regions as local elections approach. The PP asserts that it aims to demonstrate unity in the face of perceived fractures within the PSOE.

On Monday, the PP established its campaign steering committee. The lineup includes director Elías Bendodo and campaign development coordinator Íñigo de la Serna, the former minister, along with Miguel Tellado as organizational coordinator and Pedro Rollán heading regional strategy. Javier Campoy will lead the election strategy, while Carmen has joined Fúnez de la Serna. Ángel González will coordinate public events, with communications managed by Mar Sánchez and Luis de la Matta. Marta Varela and Isabel Figueira will oversee the president’s campaign, and Ángel Fernández will coordinate Natalia López and Tomás Burgos. The national team will handle leadership campaigns, and Paula Gómez Angulo, Jaime De los Santos, José Vicente Marí, Pilar Marcos, and Lorena Roldán will drive sectoral actions.

The regional and municipal elections campaign team for the coming May features several leaders who backed Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría during the PP primaries when she faced Pablo Casado in the 2018 runoff. Casado then emerged victorious in the extraordinary congress following the censorship bill. Santamaría later earned support from Elías Bendodo, the current coordinator of the popular party and campaign manager for the May elections; former Public Works Minister Íñigo de la Serna; and Senator Carmen Fúñez. A photo captures them sharing a moment over pizza, a gesture linked to the Santamaría team at that time, with Basque politician Alfonso Alonso and Iñaki Oyarzábal present as well.

The PP held its regular weekly press conference at 13:00 following the board meeting chaired every Monday. This time, Alberto Núñez Feijóo limited his remarks to announcing the spokesperson for the campaign committee. The party’s plans were kept under wraps until his appearance in the press room alongside Sémper, who accepted a formal commitment and challenge ahead of the May elections.
