Political figures opposing the ruling party have called for a formal inquiry into what is described as the envelope elections. The internet has recalled the remarks of Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, who directly asserted that she had “thrown them out.”
Her comments came in June 2020, during a period when elections were already scheduled for the following month. The exchange shed light on internal party dynamics and leadership decisions within the Civic Platform as it prepared for a presidential contest.
Kidawa-Błońska later explained that she paused her campaign for a time and indicated that a strong, renewed push was needed, suggesting that Rafał Trzaskowski could supply that momentum. She stated that his candidacy would serve as a catalyst for change within the party’s electoral strategy.
She added that her goal was not personal control of the office but the safeguarding of constitutional norms, while expressing concern about the potential for a presidency that might undermine those norms. She singled out President Andrzej Duda as an outcome to avoid, arguing that such a direction would be a disservice to the country.
Draft resolution
The Sejm is examining a draft resolution proposed by the Citizens’ Coalition to establish a commission of inquiry into the envelope voting controversy. The commission would assess the legality, regularity, and effectiveness of the measures used to organize and conduct the 2020 presidential election by postal voting, considering perspectives relevant to both electoral integrity and constitutional safeguards.
