Polish President’s Advisor Comments on Social Programs and Future Government Formation

An advisor to Poland’s president, Łukasz Rzepecki, stated on the Sunday edition of the program Debate on Poland that as long as President Andrzej Duda remains in office, no social program will be liquidated or withdrawn.

During the interview, Rzepecki was asked which of the two prime ministerial contenders, Mateusz Morawiecki or Donald Tusk, he would recommend to the president for the task of forming a new government. He answered that this is a responsibility too weighty for him to influence the president’s decision and that the president will choose at the appropriate moment.

The adviser noted that the current moment was suitable for initial talks. A broad round of discussions took place with all parliamentary groups represented in the Sejm, and these discussions do not mark the final stage. The Presidential Palace remains open to further dialogue, and if any concerns arise or if parties wish to discuss additional issues, the president is prepared to continue conversations.

Rzepecki recalled that the date for the first Sejm session has been set for November 13, and he indicated that the earliest constitutional date for designating a candidate to form a government remains to be seen as events unfold.

He described the situation as specific: the governing party, Law and Justice, won the most votes and Morawiecki signaled willingness to form a coalition government, while other groups in the parliament finished in second, third, and fourth place and also put forward their own candidates, including President Donald Tusk.

Who will achieve a parliamentary majority is a decision for the Sejm itself, he commented.

Responding to opposition statements about budget scrutiny and audits of state finances, Rzepecki warned that such talk could be seen as signaling a readiness to dismantle social programs. He asserted that during President Duda’s tenure, no social program would be liquidated or removed, and stressed that this protection would be maintained.

He underscored this commitment firmly: the president will not allow any reduction or elimination of social programs as long as he holds the office.

– End of remarks as conveyed on Debate on Poland, with a clear emphasis on safeguarding social protections and inviting ongoing dialogue among political groups.
