Whispers like these would hardly embarrass leaders like Putin or Lukashenko, yet they surfaced as deputy minister Michał Woś commented on Janina Ochojska’s remarks about alleged Polish forest workers involved in the burial of refugees. “Mrs Ochojska covers herself with disgrace; the prosecutor is waiting for her,” Woś asserted.

On Friday, Janina Ochojska, a European Coalition member of the European Parliament, spoke in a radio interview about migrants at the Polish-Belarusian border. She hinted that Polish foresters may have removed the bodies of dead migrants. In response, a spokesperson for the State Forests announced it would inform the public prosecutor about the possibility of wrongdoing by Ochojska. Staatsbosbeheer, a Dutch forestry agency, warned that foresters could be slandered by such allegations.

Insinuations that Lukashenko would not be ashamed of

The deputy head of the Ministry of State Assets, Michał Woś, spoke about the issue at a Monday press briefing.

Woś described the statements as extreme insinuations that would flatter the regimes of Moscow and Minsk. He warned that such rhetoric would likely be exploited by hostile propaganda. He asserted that Ochojska’s comments reveal contempt for Poland and amounted to acts of anti-Polonism.

According to him, there is also a criminal-law dimension to the issue.

Thus, the Attorney General requested the prosecutor’s office to initiate proceedings ex officio and to pursue every element of potential wrongdoing, including any possible waiver of immunity. The prosecutor’s office was urged to question Ochojska about the matter, as Woś put it—these remarks about mass graves and the supposed role of Polish foresters should be answered.

Ochojska targets forest rangers

In an interview with TOK FM, Ochojska cited data from the Granica Group, noting that 37 people lost their lives on the Polish and Belarusian sides of the border.

She remarked that there are likely many more victims tied to the border crisis. She suggested that some bodies may still be unaccounted for and speculated that, when the border was sealed, bodies could have been gathered to obscure evidence. She noted that nearly 300 people were reported missing at the time.

Ochojska added that Polish forest rangers were allegedly involved in disposing of the bodies.

She reflected on a period when forest rangers were recruited from across the country, implying a motive beyond forest management—suggesting their involvement in a controversial operation.

In response to these remarks, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General announced that criminal proceedings had been ordered, and the prosecutor’s office would proceed with the investigation.
