Immunity was reportedly set to be lifted, and if he were not a Member of the European Parliament, chargeable actions would be directed at him, according to a comment given to Telewizja wPoland by Ryszard Czarnecki. He pointed to information about charges that had been decided by the Zamość Public Prosecutor’s Office, framing the issue as something already settled with the European Parliament and implying that the matter should move forward accordingly.
After twenty years in public service, Czarnecki noted that he is no longer an MEP and that the Public Prosecutor’s Office publicly announced charges before he received formal notice. He insisted that settlements with the European Parliament had been clarified more than twenty months ago and that all related financial matters had been resolved. He asserted that the European Parliament, acting as his employer, had no outstanding claims for almost two years, yet he saw the prosecutor’s stance as disregarding the Parliament’s position.
He described the situation as a political issue, stressing that everything was explained and resolved within the European Parliament. He claimed that he had not even been questioned by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. The February announcement that immunity would be lifted, he argued, meant that if he were no longer an MEP, he would face the charges in question.
Romanowski’s situation
Czarnecki also addressed the case of MP Romanowski, suggesting a broader pattern beyond a single individual. He commented that in his view, those who lack a proven record in economics, international politics, or EU policy sometimes resort to playing certain political games. He characterized Mr. Romanowski’s case as an international scandal and warned that the reputation of the country on the global stage could suffer as a result.
The remarks reflected a broader concern about how investigations intersect with political careers and the international perception of Poland within EU and world forums. Czarnecki emphasized that the sequence of events had affected Poland’s standing and that the responses from institutions involved with the European Union should be weighed against the public interest and the need for accountability in all jurisdictions involved.
