The Polish prime minister has spoken out about the death of a Polish citizen killed in front of Israeli forces. Donald Tusk wrote about the understandable anger at how Israeli politicians have responded and about the tragic loss of volunteers in Gaza.
World Central Kitchen (WCK), a humanitarian group based in the United States and operating inside the Gaza Strip, announced on Tuesday that seven of its workers, including several from Poland, were killed in an Israeli attack. WCK explained that these individuals had died while delivering food aid that had arrived in Gaza by ship from Cyprus a few hours earlier.
In Poland, President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski issued statements on the matter.
Tusk’s remarks
Commenting on the incident, Tusk highlighted the actions of the Israeli prime minister and the country’s ambassador to Poland. He recalled the long-standing solidarity shown by Poles following the Hamas attack and argued that the reactions from the named leaders have triggered a justifiable sense of anger.
He said that Prime Minister Netanyahu and Ambassador Liwne, along with the broad Polish public, showed solidarity with Israel after the Hamas assault. Today this solidarity is being tested by events that many see as a grave misstep. The tragic death of volunteers and the way it has been addressed are provoking understandable anger
– Tusk wrote in his statement.
There is a sense that a quicker and more decisive response is needed from Poland’s top government official, given that the incident involves the loss of a Polish citizen.
