Poland and Croatia pledge continued support for Ukraine amid NATO discussions

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and Croatian counterpart Mario Banozić reaffirmed their nations’ commitment to backing Ukraine, stressing that European security hinges on preventing the reemergence of any form of threat to democratic states. Błaszczak underscored that the stability of Europe and the wider free world depends on ensuring the fate of Ukraine is not ignored and that aggression does not pay off for aggressors.

The two defense chiefs met at a military facility in Bemowo Piskie, Masuria, where a multinational Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) setup currently operates. The unit includes personnel from Poland, Croatia, the United States, Romania, and Great Britain. Croatian troops in this group are equipped with artillery, and Błaszczak highlighted the critical role of artillery on today’s battlefield in the context of ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Deterring aggression and strengthening alliance solidarity

Błaszczak stated that the alliance’s tasks center on defense and deterrence, demonstrating that attacks on NATO members are not advantageous. He emphasized NATO unity and solidarity as essential, especially in light of concerns on the eastern flank. He also noted the importance of presenting a united front within the alliance to deter potential aggressors.

Polish engagement in Western Balkans

The discussions between Błaszczak and Banozić, conducted in Bemowo Piskie, lasted about an hour. The Polish minister reported on ongoing cooperation between the two countries and outlined Polish activities in the Western Balkans, including collaboration within NATO and EU frameworks and preparation for the Vilnius NATO summit, which is viewed as highly significant for regional security.

Joint efforts for Ukraine

The talks also covered continued support for a struggling Ukraine. Both ministers agreed that assistance should persist, stressing that European and global security depends on preventing a recurrence of aggression. Błaszczak reiterated the importance of sustained international support for Ukraine as a core security objective.

During the meeting, Banozić highlighted the value of multinational exercises for rapid learning and adaptability. He expressed hope that more Croatian troops would soon rotate through Poland, citing Poland’s ability to adapt within the alliance to ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine as an example. He also affirmed Croatia’s ongoing political, financial, medical, and military backing for Ukraine, noting a willingness to continue this support for as long as necessary.

Stressing NATO unity and renewed commitments

Banozić conveyed best wishes for the Polish forces’ performance and urged strong cooperation within NATO to meet evolving challenges. He remarked that increased contributions and cooperation demonstrate the alliance’s strength in the face of current security risks.

Poland participates in NATO’s eFP initiative as a host and contributor, coordinating the activities of multiple eFP groups through a multinational division based in Elbląg. The core strength of eFP lies in four battalion-sized groups deployed across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, each formed by a framework nation, including the United States, Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Closing reflections on a resilient alliance

The discussions and joint preparations underscore a commitment to collective defense and to maintaining a robust deterrent posture. The partners highlighted the need to sustain diplomatic and military support for Ukraine, while continuing to strengthen cooperation across NATO and EU forums in preparation for upcoming security challenges. Through ongoing collaboration and clear resolve, the alliance aims to project stability and resilience amid a fluctuating security landscape.
