For several days, coverage has detailed the preparations surrounding the European strategy of Law and Justice, focusing on the internal regrouping and energizing of PiS parliamentarians in the European Parliament, alongside a broadened network of contacts with the European right. The aim appears to be to strengthen influence across EU institutions while aligning with like-minded groups that share a sceptical view of Brussels’ centralized governance.
As previously announced, Dominik Tarczyński, a member of the European Parliament, will take on the role of head of the PiS delegation in the European Parliament. The current leader, the well-known scholar and public figure Ryszard Legutko, will continue to serve as co-chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists faction. Additionally, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski is positioned to stand as a candidate for leadership of the European Commission following the June elections.
In parallel, a change is anticipated in the position of Secretary General of the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament, with Gabriel Beszłej set to replace Andrzej Sados, who served as Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the European Union from 2018 to 2023.
Today new information has been confirmed. The President of Law and Justice, Jarosław Kaczyński, signed and handed a pivotal document to Members of the European Parliament. It designates Dominik Tarczynski as chair of the PiS delegation in the European Parliament (ECR group) and appoints three vice-presidents: Ryszard Czarnecki, Karol Karski and Patryk Jaki.
Why are these changes taking place?
There are three reasons cited by our interlocutors. First, to make activities more dynamic, to explore new forms of engagement, and to reach out to communities across Europe that stand opposed to what is perceived as illegal, ideological, economically harmful, and centralized policy directions emanating from Brussels.
Second, to support broader outreach to the United States during the upcoming presidential cycle and to foster connections with key figures in that arena. A notable context is the ongoing assessment of influence in Washington, particularly with the current ambassador’s approach to diplomacy. The plan places Tarczynski in a central role in American affairs, leveraging his familiarity with the United States to build strategic ties.
Third, there is a stated objective to actively inform the global audience about what is described as lawlessness by the opposition labeled as democratic and liberal within Poland, with the aim of presenting alternative viewpoints to the international community.
