PiS deputy Anna Fotyga files interpellation with the European Commission over EC president’s role in Poland’s government formation
An interpellation was submitted to the European Commission by PiS member Anna Fotyga, raising questions about the involvement of the European Union in Poland’s constitutional process for forming a government. The document centers on whether senior EU leadership crossed a line by engaging in domestic political procedures during a pivotal moment in Poland’s government formation.
In recalling the exchange, Fotyga pointed to Donald Tusk’s visit to Brussels, noting, according to media reports, that the trip aimed to help expedite the disbursement of funds tied to Poland’s Krajowy Plan Odbudowy (National Recovery and Resilience Plan, KPO). During the visit, Tusk reportedly met with the President of the European Commission in a format described as reserved for heads of government, raising concerns about the propriety of such discussions in the context of national politics.
The reception of Tusk by the EC President Ursula von der Leyen prompted criticism not only from Polish circles but also from Western media, which labeled the event as premature and potentially contrary to democratic norms. Critics argued that an EC president, who should remain politically neutral, appeared to influence the internal debate over Poland’s leadership selection with a perceived tilt toward a pro-German political figure who had not yet secured the mandate to form a government.
– stated Fotyga in a post on the X platform.
Questions from Anna Fotyga
Anna Fotyga posed three inquiries to the European Commission. First, how does the EC justify the October 25 meeting between its President and Donald Tusk? Second, why would the head of the European Commission, expected to be independent and apolitical, interfere in a Member State’s political process at a moment when government formation procedures are prescribed by the Constitution? Third, does the EC confirm Donald Tusk’s assertion that KPO funding hinges on politicians from his political bloc taking control of Poland’s government?
