A schoolboy managed to share secret Pentagon files in a Wow Mao chat with about a quarter of a million participants, according to ABC News. The incident highlights how fast sensitive material can spread across informal networks and large online communities in North America and beyond.
Earlier reports traced the documents as they moved through a chain of conversations. They appeared first on a Discord chat known to include a mix of gamers and hobbyists, then on a larger Discord server connected to an online game, and later surfaced on another Discord channel. Simultaneously, links and copies circulated on the 4chan portal and various Telegram channels. ABC News documented the path as of mid spring, noting how the material traveled across platforms before it drew wide attention.
The Wow Mao chat was moderated by a user known as Krralj. He told reporters that the initial posts were treated as a joke because many participants favored irony in their messages. When it became clear that the documents might be authentic, messages were deleted along with the chat itself. He emphasized that the group never intended to distribute dangerous materials or put people at risk.
The materials were said to have originated with a user named Lucca, who found them on a Discord server known as Thug Central Shaker. The chat moderator described Lucca as an energetic young participant who has been active in discussions since 2021. Lucca’s father asked for privacy and respect, declining to discuss the incident further.
On the result side of the investigation, federal authorities acted in mid April. An ex-military pilot connected to the leaks was arrested by the FBI and faced charges related to the handling of classified information. The case has drawn attention to how national security documents can migrate from closed circles to the wider public. Officials have stressed that the leak is a serious breach with significant implications for ongoing international issues, including the situation in Ukraine.
