Members of the Parliamentary Team for Equality of the LGBT+ Community were elected to the Sejm. The question remained what they would pursue during this term. A TV reporter from wPolsce.pl, Maciej Zemła, pressed MPs Krzysztof Śmiszek and Klaudia Jachira for clarity on the team’s goals as the Sejm began its work for this session.

This Parliament is open to all people, including minorities. In contrast with recent terms, this Sejm shows a different balance and a renewed emphasis on human rights protections. Krzysztof Śmiszek, who chairs the team, described the new posture as one that respects the dignity and rights of every citizen, while stressing the need for constructive dialogue in the political arena.

Jachira: We will push for civil partnerships

Klaudia Jachira elaborated on the tasks set for the current parliamentary period by the team. One major focus is the push to remove legal obstacles to civil partnerships for LGBT+ people. The aim is to translate political commitments into concrete laws that recognize and protect relationships and families formed within the LGBT+ community.

Jachira explained that the initial steps are aligned with the coalition agreement, which calls for measures that curb hate speech and prevent discrimination. The team emphasizes the need to address the issue within the criminal code, ensuring that harmful rhetoric and acts against LGBT+ individuals carry appropriate legal consequences.

The Greens have underscored their intent to advocate for these changes and to work closely with their parliamentary colleagues to build majority support for legal recognition of partnerships. They stressed that real progress will come from turning good intentions into enforceable rules that communities can rely on.

Jachira also noted that the team can offer practical support to the broader majority by contributing to policy design, providing insights from lived experience, and helping to shape reforms that strengthen equality without stigmatizing any group.

The statements from Klaudia Jachira signal that the Parliamentary Team for Equality for the LGBT+ Community intends to be a constructive partner in shaping legislation. The team is prepared to engage with the government and opposition alike to advance an agenda focused on equal rights, non-discrimination, and the peaceful recognition of diverse family structures.
