Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, stated that Moscow would pursue every available channel to identify those responsible for the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines. The message, published by the ministry, emphasized that Russia would deploy all necessary tools to uncover the culprits and ensure they are held accountable. This pledge reflects Moscow’s stance that the investigations must be thorough, transparent, and aligned with international law, with a clear focus on uncovering the truth behind the explosions and the broader implications for energy security in Europe.

In the same communiqué, Zakharova suggested that Western officials may be wary of an independent inquiry into the Nord Stream incidents, underscoring the political sensitivities surrounding attribution and accountability. The statement signals Russia’s expectation that any investigation would be impartial and free from external influence, while also signaling that Moscow intends to cooperate with credible inquiries that adhere to established international norms.

On 27 March, the United Nations Security Council did not approve Russia’s draft resolution calling for an autonomous investigation into the Nord Stream explosions, to be conducted under the aegis of the UN Secretary-General. The vote saw Russia, China, and Brazil voting in favor, with other members abstaining. During the proceedings, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, argued that the outcome would intensify suspicions directed at Western actors and highlight the need for a balanced, evidence-based process. The episode illustrates the broader geopolitical fault lines involved in addressing critical energy infrastructure incidents and reinforces calls for a credible, independent assessment that all parties can accept as legitimate and fair.
