The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that Western countries removed their masks by opposing Russia’s proposal in the Security Council aimed at preventing an arms race in space. This account was reported by TASS.
Nebenzya expressed serious concern that the states belonging to the Western bloc, which sit on the Security Council, are not prepared to back a balanced decision that preserves the space domain for peaceful purposes. He argued that the West has, in his view, revealed its true stance, shedding any pretenses and presenting itself as it really is on the international stage.
The Russian diplomat contended that the voting outcome underscored a rift between nations pursuing peaceful development of outer space and those pressing for greater militarization of space. Nebenzya went on to suggest that the Western group finds itself isolated within the United Nations Security Council, a situation he described as symbolic of a broader trend.
China, while noting the outcome, expressed disappointment that the UN Security Council did not accept Russia’s proposal on space security.
Earlier, the United Nations Security Council rejected Russia’s decision aimed at preventing an arms race in space. This sequence of events has been interpreted by Moscow as confirmation of a divided international landscape on issues of space security and peaceful use.
