National Security Council Discusses Public Media Law Reforms in Poland

A brief exchange occurred between President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the National Security Council meeting regarding potential changes to the public media law. The President’s Chancellery stated that no specific draft regulations were submitted to the President and that the discussion followed decisions made by Minister Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz.

Any prospective changes to the law do not justify or erase yesterday’s grave violation of the law, the Chancellery added.

Did Tusk begin discussions with the president on this issue?

At a Thursday press conference, the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, Jan Grabiec, discussed the Sejm resolution on public media. He noted that the resolution, in reference to the Constitutional Court ruling of December 13, 2016, calls for immediate corrective measures to restore the rule of law and ensure citizens have access to information until suitable legal solutions are in place.

Following this resolution, work began on a new framework for public media. Prime Minister Tusk has already initiated talks with President Duda. The process is intended to be broad in scope, conducted in a climate of social dialogue, and inclusive of viewpoints from all stakeholders, including creative communities and civil society associations.

When asked about consultations between Prime Minister Tusk and President Duda on the future shape of public media and whether the President could contribute ideas to related projects, Grabiec replied that the government plans to pursue a transparent process with open discussion.
